The definition of a composition is that the work is created from imagination. It is clear that Sasun is a painter of thematic compositions and his canvases with biblical themes are also expressions of Sasun’s inner world. These compositions are endowed with wild melancholy and light lyricism and built up from overlain paint layers that create a shimmer of depth and colour. One of the most important paintings in this collection is “The Refugees” depicting the Armenia Genocide in Turkey in 1915. This was his Diploma piece, at the time many members of the committee were against this theme due to the political interpretation but being particularly close to his own origins, it shows his individualistic thinking & concern of what was a global humanitarian tragedy.
